Chapter 16

“You can't keep me in here. I’ll freeze death!" a man's voice cried from the direction of the cooler as Ronan and I hurried down the stairs.

"Count yourself lucky I'm keeping you anywhere other than in a body bag," Alexa replied, her tone the temperature of ice. "The only reason you're still alive is that we need information. You might want to keep that in mind over the next hour or so. You can make it easy, or you can make it hard. That'll be up to you, but we will get it."

Not even an ounce of pity trickled through me as I pulled the walk-in door open.

A tall, thin, sandy-haired man sat on a crate of lettuce, his arms wrapped around himself as he shivered. I tapped into Ronan's magic and borrowed a bit of his heat. As a werewolf, his body temp ran much toastier than the average person's, and this seemed like an excellent time to draw on that. Though the laws of physics dictated a higher body temp would make you feel colder, it didn't work that way with them.

Once his warmth pushed away the chill, I moved to stand beside Alexa, making room for Ronan. Though she appeared relaxed as she leaned against an empty spot on the silver wall, I knew her well enough to recognize that every muscle was tense and ready to pounce. She hadn't survived as many battles as she had by letting her guard down around an enemy even if she did think they were at her mercy.

"Have you gotten anything out of him?" I asked.

She shook her head. "No, I figured I'd wait for you guys to get down here. The biggest problem we had was keeping Brutus from eating him."

I curved my lips into a wan half-smile and leaned a shoulder against the other wall, letting the door swing shut behind us. The cooler was not only self-contained, it was also pretty much soundproof as long as we didn’t get too ridiculous. As pissed as I was, though, I wasn’t making any guarantees. "Yeah, we need to teach him that that's not the solution to every problem. I would've rather had two people to question than one, but it is what it is."

"What are you gonna do to me?" the man whined, his voice shaking with fear as his gaze darted back and forth between the three of us.

I crossed my arms and smirked at him. "I don't know. I may end up letting my dog eat you, but not yet. Maybe I should ask what you were planning to do to our friend and go from there."

The man snapped his mouth shut and broke eye contact.

Alexa's lips curled into a ravenous smile that mirrored the one Ronan had worn just a few moments before. "Oh good. I was hoping you were going to play it that way. I’ve been stressed lately. You see, all the attacks on magicals have made me cranky, and now here you are, knowing all sorts of good things that you don’t want to share.
